Our vision is a world in which people who have fundamental differences of opinion and backgrounds work together with respect, and perhaps joy, to realize the vibrant future we all desire.
Living Room Conversations is a new, open-source project exploring the power of revitalized civil discourse in America. It provides a platform for people to come together through social networks to engage in self-guided conversations about specific topics. Typically, conversations have cohosts who hold differing views, perhaps from different ethnic groups, socioeconomic backgrounds or political parties. Each co-host invites two friends and the group follows an easy-to-use format and set of questions to get acquainted with each other and with each other’s viewpoints on a chosen topic. These conversations foster new relationships and often reveal common ground.
Our political system is characterized by increasingly polarized partisan behavior and we at Living Room Conversations believe we can—we must—do better. We have faith in the good will, intelligence and power of Americans. It is time to rebuild a respectful civil discourse and embrace our shared values because adversarial approaches will not solve the enormous challenges we face now and in the future. We must learn to engage in collaborative problem solving by recognizing the tension of our differences while working together with respect and open hearts.
Together we can create solutions that are better than any partisan group can devise.
